On May 18th, the US SEC announced in a statement that Heather Slavkin Corzo, a well-known critic of cryptocurrencies, will step down as its policy director. Corzo was appointed by SEC Chairperson Gary Gensler in April 2021. During his tenure, Corzo played a key role in implementing market fund reforms, speeding up the securities settlement cycle, and enhancing corporate disclosure of cyber security incidents. These measures have been praised for strengthening investor protection and streamlining the capital formation process. Follow-up SEC financial advisor Corey Klemmer will succeed Corzo, and the SEC is expected to maintain its skepticism towards cryptocurrencies.
