Somboun Sangxayarath, a consultant at Laos' state-owned Electricity Company (EDL), said that increasing electricity demand in Laos due to cryptocurrency mining and erratic rainfall has led to power shortages, indicating a challenge to the country's prospects as a hydropower exporter to South East Asia.
