According to Reuters, El Salvador has successfully mined nearly 474 bitcoins since 2021 using geothermal energy provided by the Tekapa volcano, increasing the government's bitcoin reserves to 5,750, worth nearly $354 million at current prices. El Salvador is the first country in the world to make bitcoin legal tender, a move that has attracted criticism from institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Currently, 1.50 trillion watts of the 102 trillion watts of electricity generated by the country's geothermal power plants are used for bitcoin mining.
