The Bank of Lithuania has issued a circular urging virtual currency exchange operators that do not intend to apply for a crypto asset service provider license to take immediate action to ensure a smooth closure of their business. According to the European Union Crypto Asset Market Regulation (MiCA), Lithuania's transition period will end on December 31, 2025, after which unlicensed crypto asset services will be considered illegal financial activities and may face penalties of up to four years in prison.
The regulator stressed that companies should actively communicate to ensure that customers are informed of the closure schedule and asset transfer guidelines in a timely manner, and return customer assets before the end of the transition period. About 30 companies have applied to the Bank of Lithuania for a crypto asset service provider license, of which 10 applications are being evaluated.
