Klarna, a Swedish digital bank and payment services company, has announced a partnership with Coinbase to raise short-term funds denominated in stablecoins from institutional investors through Coinbase's digital infrastructure. This will allow Klarna to add a USDC stablecoin-denominated funding channel to its existing traditional funding sources, including user deposits, long-term loans, and short-term commercial paper. This approach will help Klarna directly reach more institutional investors and access a stable source of funding similar to the US dollar.
Klarna said the move was a "first step" in exploring how digital assets and traditional financing channels work together, and would continue to advance its crypto and stablecoin-related business layout in the direction of consumers and merchants, which is expected to continue in 2026.
