A 23-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with 31 counts in connection with a phishing scam that stole about $16 million worth of cryptocurrency from about 100 Coinbase users, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced Friday.
Ronald Spector, a resident of Heaps Head Bay, has been charged with first-degree grand larceny and money laundering. The criminal activity is said to have lasted from April 2023 to December 2024.
Prosecutors allege that Spector contacted victims posing as a Coinbase representative to warn them that their assets were at risk of hacking. He allegedly tricked users into transferring assets to new wallets he secretly controlled, and then laundered money through cryptocurrency mixers, exchange services and gambling platforms.
