The Brooklyn district attorney said Friday that 23-year-old resident Ronald Spector was charged with stealing $16 million worth of cryptocurrency from about 100 Coinbase users.
The man, who goes by the online name "lolimfeelingevil" (meaning "I am full of evil thoughts"), is accused of being behind a phishing and social engineering scam. Prosecutors say Spector posed as a customer service staff of the Coinbase platform and tricked users into transferring cryptocurrency to accounts he controlled.
Prosecutors also noted that Mr. Spector would deceive his victims by falsely claiming that their digital assets were at risk of being stolen by hackers. He then allegedly tried to launder the illegally acquired digital assets through cryptocurrency mixers, token exchange services and cryptocurrency gambling sites.
