Twenty-four leading artificial intelligence companies have signed up to join the US government's Genesis Mission, an initiative by the Trump administration to promote the use of emerging artificial intelligence technologies for scientific discovery and energy projects. According to a White House statement, companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Cloud as a Service (AWS) and Alphabet have signed memorandums of understanding with the government, are working on existing collaborations with the Department of Energy and national laboratories, or have expressed interest in participating in the initiative. Michael Krazios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said: "Project Genesis will help US scientists automate experimental design, accelerate simulations and generate predictive models that can drive breakthroughs in energy, manufacturing, drug discovery and more." The initiative, announced by executive order last month, aims to better co-ordinate research across government agencies and integrate artificial intelligence tools more effectively for more scientific breakthroughs. Mr. Krazios said at the time that the mission would use computing resources at the Department of Energy's national laboratories to tap into federal data sets to drive more artificial intelligence-based experiments, predicting that the move would shorten the time period for scientific discovery.
