Vitalik responds to AI data center ban proposal: more valuable solution is to build a "pause button" capability

On December 17, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, responded to US Senator Bernie Sanders' call for a moratorium on the construction of large data centers for AI. Vitalik said that there is a reason to support the "slowdown" of AI development, but he believes that a more valuable solution than a simple pause is to build a "pause button" capability, that is, at a more critical moment in the future, it can reduce the available computing power by 90% -99% in 1-2 years. At the same time, he believes that a distinction should be made between hyperscale computing power clusters and consumer-grade AI hardware, which tends to promote a slower pace and more decentralized progress, but also points out that relevant regulatory measures may be easily bypassed and may not be effective in achieving the goal.
