Anatoly Aksakov, chairperson of the financial marekt committee of the Russian State Duma, made it clear to RIA Novosti recently that bitcoin and ethereum will never become legal means of payment in Russia. He stressed: "We must understand that cryptocurrencies will never become money in Russia. Cryptocurrencies can only be used as investment vehicles. When payments are required, they must be made only in rubles."
While Russia's central bank has been adamantly opposed to cryptocurrencies, the government appears to be moving in the direction of regulation rather than a total ban. Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged the growth of the cryptocurrency mining industry, and there have been reports that Russian companies have used cryptocurrencies for billions of dollars in cross-border trade.
