White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said that if he is selected to lead the Federal Reserve, he will consider President Trump's policy advice, but the Fed will remain independent in its interest rate decisions.
Speaking on CBS 'Face the Nation on Sunday, Kevin Hassett said the president had a very strong and well-founded view of the Fed's actions, but added that the Fed's job was to remain independent and work with board members and FOMC colleagues to reach a collective consensus on the level of interest rates.
Kevin Hassett was responding to questions about Trump's comments on Friday, when he said he should be able to advise on interest rates set by the Federal Reserve. Trump and his top advisers have been pressing Fed Chair Powell for a rate cut for months, while also weighing a replacement for Powell.
