The Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) released an investor guidance bulletin for crypto wallets and custody on Friday, explaining to the public the best practices and common risks of different forms of crypto asset storage.
The SEC's announcement listed the advantages and disadvantages of various crypto custody methods, including self-custody compared to holding digital assets on behalf of a third party.
If investors choose escrow, they should be aware of the escrow's policies, including whether it will "re-pledge" the assets under escrow (profiting by lending them), or whether the service provider mixes client assets in a pool of funds rather than holding crypto assets separately in separate client accounts.
