Federal Reserve Hamak: Preferring a tighter stance, current policy is close to neutral
2025-12-12 15:14:43
Cleveland Fed President Michael Hamack said she would prefer interest rates to be slightly tighter to keep pressure on inflation, which is still too high. "Right now our policy is roughly neutral," Mr. Hamack said on Friday. "I would prefer a slightly tighter stance to help keep the pressure on inflation." Ms. Hamack, who does not vote this year but will be eligible to vote in 2026, did not respond directly when asked whether she supported this week's rate cut, calling it a "complex decision" because policymakers are facing two-way pressure from a dual mandate. Ms. Hamack also said she expected key inflation and employment data to be released in the coming weeks to help policymakers make clearer judgments about where the economy is headed. She also pointed out that the Federal Reserve lacks the appropriate tools to respond to structural changes in the economy.
