Deep in a vault in Singapore known as Fort Knox Asia, where top wines and priceless paintings are kept, a complete 69 million-year-old Triceratops skeleton - only 24 known in the world - is owned by a group of collectors, including Yoann Turpin, co-founder of crypto market maker Wintermute.
The trading executive and his co-investors paid about $5 million for the more than five-meter-long fossil, which was shipped from Wyoming to Singapore's Le Freeport earlier this year. All four owners invest in cryptocurrencies, including Chaw Wei Yang, who runs the Co-Museum, a collectibles-themed platform.
The purchase reflects a shift in the tastes of the crypto elite, whose interest in digital art began to wane after the NFT craze of 2022. Today, executives in the digital currency space are increasingly collecting antiques, precious metals and statues.
