Senators are trying to resolve key points of disagreement over legislation to regulate the cryptocurrency industry in the final weeks of the year, with the goal of moving the bill out of committee after months of negotiations. Republicans are pushing ahead with revisions to crypto market structure legislation next week, even as fellow Democrats continue to seek changes to the text and lawmakers are just days away from the city.
"Time is running out. I think realistically there are only about 48 hours to see if this bill can move forward next week," said an industry insider familiar with the market structure legislative process.
Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming), a leading proponent of cryptocurrency legislation, said Tuesday that her goal is to release an updated draft by the end of the week that she believes is "our best work to date" and review the bill next week. "I think we've reached a point where it's better to come up with a plan, review the amendments next week, and then let everyone take a break over the Christmas break to catch their breath," she said at the Blockchain Association Policy Summit.
