President Donald Trump this week kicks off the final round of interviews for the Federal Reserve chairperson, with Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, competing against three other candidates. Mr. Trump and Treasury Secretary Vincent Bessant are scheduled to interview Kevin Walsh, a former Fed governor, on Wednesday, according to three senior administration officials. Despite concerns among some Wall Street investors that Hassett is too close to the president and could cut interest rates too aggressively, he remains in the lead to succeed Powell next May, officials said. However, the decision to go ahead with the additional interviews suggests Hassett is not a candidate for DingTalk on the board. Officials also raised the possibility of Hassett shortening his term. Mr. Bessant has submitted a list of four names to the White House, including Mr. Hassett and Mr. Walsh, according to officials. The other two candidates will be chosen from a "list of other finalists", including Mr. Waller, the Fed governor, Mr. Bowman and Rick Riddle of BlackRock. (Financial Times)
