Hassett: The Federal Reserve has ample room to cut interest rates significantly

Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council and a favourite to be the next Fed chairperson, said on Tuesday that he thought the central bank had "plenty of room" to cut interest rates significantly. Asked whether his appointment would push for the "big rate cuts" Mr. Trump wants, he responded: "If the data shows we can do that - like right now - I think there is plenty of room to do that." Pressed further on whether that would mean a rate cut of more than 25 basis points, he clearly replied: "Yes." In an interview with Politico on Tuesday, Mr. Trump said a quick rate cut would be a "litmus test" for his choice of Fed chairperson. Asked whether his loyalty would be to Mr. Trump or to independent economic judgment, Mr. Hassett said: "I stand by my judgment and I believe the president trusts mine."
