A San Jose widow who thought she had found a new romance online only to lose nearly a million dollars to a cryptocurrency "romance scam" discovered she had been duped after consulting ChatGPT about the reliability of the investment offer.
The scam not only emptied her retirement account, but also put her in a crisis where she could lose her home, according to San Jose-based ABC Channel 7 coverage.
The woman, Margaret Locke, met a man who identified himself as "Ed" on Facebook in May last year. The relationship quickly moved to a chat app on Watsump, where the man falsely claimed to be a wealthy businessman who sent her daily affectionate messages and induced her to open up to him.
