On December 9th, according to TheBlock, the Department of Justice announced today that 22-year-old California man Evan Tangeman has pleaded guilty to money laundering for a crypto scam gang involving an amount of $263 million, and he laundered more than $3.50 million for the scam gang.
Tangeman is the ninth defendant to plead guilty in the investigation, the Justice Department said. The group committed fraud between October 2023 and May 2025. About 4,100 bitcoins were stolen, worth $263 million at the time, or about $371 million at current prices.
The group consists of hackers, organisers, target recognisers, phone fraudsters and burglars who specialise in stealing hardware wallets and use the stolen databases to pick targets. Hackers breach websites and servers to access cryptocurrency-related databases, which the target recognisers use to screen the most valuable victims.
