On Thursday, the European Union Commission published a package proposing "direct regulation" of key market infrastructure including crypto asset service providers (CASPs), trading venues, and central counterparties of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
If the package is passed, the role of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) in regulating European Union capital markets would be closer to the centralized framework of the Securities Exchange Commission, a concept first proposed by European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde in 2023.
