Mario Nawfal, founder and CEO of Dubai-based venture capital firm IBC Group, said in a social media post that when I was talking to SBF about the collapse of FTX (interview to be released soon), he shared an unexpected story with me. SBF's former cellmate, Juan Orlando Hernández, former president of Honduras, has just been pardoned by Trump. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison in the United States last June for drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.
"I lived with Juan Orlando in the same cell for a year and a half. I know him quite well. I like to believe we became friends. I can't think of a prisoner more deserving of amnesty. He was framed," the SBF said.
The SBF has spent considerable time helping Hernández prepare for his trial and reviewing relevant evidence. "Not only is he not a drug lord, he is probably the most effective anti-drug cartel leader in the world," the SBF said. "Juan Orlando is the most innocent prisoner I have ever met, including myself." The amnesty comes just days before Honduras's November 30 election, in which Mr. Trump endorsed Nasry Asfura, candidate for Mr. Hernández's National Party.
