Kazuo Ueda, governor of the Bank of Japan, said that the level of the neutral interest rate can only be estimated within a wide range for now. The market is widely expected that the central bank may raise interest rates again this month to bring interest rates closer to the neutral level. "With regard to the neutral rate, unfortunately, it can only be estimated within a fairly broad range at this time," Mr. Ueda told parliament on Thursday. "We don't know the exact level, but it will depend on that how much and how high the nominal rate will eventually rise. I want to stress that there is some uncertainty." Mr. Ueda added that the Bank of Japan was trying to narrow the estimate range for the neutral rate, which the BoJ has released in previous research reports that the neutral rate is roughly between 1% and 2.5%.
