A new report by the top Democrat on the US House Judiciary Committee accuses President Donald Trump of abusing his influence over the nation's crypto policy to benefit himself and his family. The document, released this week by Rep. Jamie Raskin, says Mr. Trump's pro-crypto stance is closely intertwined with his private business interests, which have generated "hundreds of millions of dollars" for the Trump family during his current term.
The committee's minority report claims that Trump is using the White House position to promote businesses linked to his family, while allowing his political allies and foreigners to gain privileged access and access by investing in crypto businesses with close ties to Trump.
Mr. Raskin said the scale of this potential conflict of interest was unprecedented. "We don't yet know where all the money is coming from, but the United States has never seen corruption on this scale within the White House," he said. According to the document, Mr. Trump's policy stance is "yet another Trump family self-serving scheme built on pay-for-opportunity deals and corrupt foreign interests seeking covert channels to gain influence".
Democrats do not currently control both houses of Congress, so the report cannot immediately trigger action. However, it comes at a politically sensitive time: crypto legislation is stalled in the Senate, while budget negotiations over health care and social services are underway.
