According to Beincrypto, more than 300 victims and family members of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel have sued Binance and founder Changpeng Zhao in federal court in North Dakota under the Anti-Terrorism Act, accusing them of knowingly assisting the terrorist organization in conducting cryptocurrency transactions.
The 284-page complaint alleges that Binance processed more than $1 billion in transactions for U.S.-designated terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, and provided services knowing that the accounts were controlled by terrorist organizations. The complaint details a number of terrorist-related digital wallets, including the case of a Venezuelan gold smuggling network: a 26-year-old woman received 177 million dollars in cryptocurrency and withdrew 43 million dollars in cash to finance terrorist activities.
The case comes less than two years after Binance pleaded guilty and paid a $4.30 billion fine in 2023, and the first month after Changpeng Zhao was pardoned by Trump. Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, Binance could face triple punitive damages if found guilty of aiding international terrorism.
A federal judge in New York ruled in February that the plaintiffs reasonably accused Binance of knowingly and materially assisting the attack. Binance currently faces four related lawsuits in the United States.
