The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has appointed Tommaso Mancini-Grifoli, one of the world's most influential digital currency economists, as the next head of the BIS Innovation Centre, effective March 2026. Mancini-Grifoli will "lead the central banking community's work to explore innovative technological solutions", the BIS said on Tuesday. His responsibilities are expected to include ongoing work on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), tokenized assets and new market infrastructure.
Mancini-Gerry Foley is currently the assistant director of the international monetary fund's monetary and capital markets department, responsible for payments and money. He is one of the most prominent advocates within the international monetary fund for a regulated and publicly funded digital currency model, having previously warned about the risks of unregulated stablecoins.
The appointment comes as the BIS Innovation Centre, which has become an important venue for testing blockchain-based settlement systems and digital currency prototypes, accelerates major projects and expands its presence in centres around the world.
