According to Cointelegraph, Trustwave's cyber security research team SpiderLabs recently reported that a banking Trojan called "Eternidade Stealer" is spreading on a large scale in Brazil through WhatsApp.
Attackers use social engineering techniques such as fake government program notifications, courier messages, and investment groups to trick users into clicking on malicious links. Once clicked, the malicious software simultaneously infects devices and hijacks WhatsApp accounts, automatically spreading to the victim's contact list. The Trojan is able to scan and steal login credentials for multiple Brazilian banks, fintech companies, and cryptocurrency exchanges. To avoid detection, the malicious software uses a default Gmail account to receive instructions, rather than a fixed server address. Security experts advise users to remain vigilant for any links, even from trusted contacts, and to keep the software updated to protect against such attacks.
