The number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits rose sharply between mid-September and mid-October, government data released on Tuesday showed, suggesting that the unemployment rate may have been high in October at a time when an uncertain economic environment is dampening companies' willingness to hire. A Labor Department spokesperson said "technical issues caused some data to be released earlier", adding that "this is currently being corrected and the full data series will be released before the close of business on November 20, 2025".
The data showed that the number of people who continued to receive unemployment benefits after the first week of claims (a measure considered a proxy measure of hiring) rose by 10,000 seasonally adjusted to 1.957 million in the week ended October 18. The number of renewals jumped sharply from the 1.916 million in the week ended September 13. (Jin 10)
