According to DLNews, Vitalik Buterin said at the Devconnect conference in Buenos Aires that the Ethereum base layer should gradually "ossify", locking down core functions to prevent the introduction of vulnerabilities.
"More rigidity has been good for Ethereum over time, and we now have a lot less surprises," Vitalik told an audience of more than 500. This marks a shift from an emphasis on flexibility to stability, where "boredom" may be a strength rather than a weakness for a network that protects hundreds of billions of dollars in value.
Vitalik emphasizes that rigidity is not a total freeze: the consensus layer can be locked down while the EVM remains flexible, or vice versa. The key is to shift innovation from the base layer to the periphery such as Layer 2, wallets and privacy tools. "It is healthy to shift the focus from L1 to the periphery ecosystem."
He admits that the early "spirit of exploration" has faded with the proliferation of meme coins and the entry of institutions, criticizing the "fast follower" mentality for damaging the imagination.
