On November 16th, as winter approaches, some Americans are starting to use the heat generated by cryptocurrency mining to heat their homes. According to an analysis by digital asset broker K33, the bitcoin mining industry generates about 100 TWh of heat per year, which is enough to meet the heating needs of the whole of Finland, but most of the heat is wasted.
There are already $900 devices on the market that can act as space heaters as well as bitcoin mining. In Challis, Idaho, Softwarm is testing bitcoin mining equipment to heat local shops.
However, Derek Mohr, a professor at the University of Rochester, has questioned this, arguing that the success rate of home computer mining is extremely low and the heating method is not efficient. Proponents argue that with the popularity of plug-and-play mining equipment, the concept may become feasible in more regions. (CNBC)
