U.S. stocks fell at the start of trading on Thursday, potentially drawing to a close a four-day streak of gains after investors were still grappling with a lack of U.S. economic data despite the end of the government shutdown. Carol Schleif, chief market strategist at BMO Private Wealth, said the government reopening was a "positive" for the market. We wouldn't be surprised by market volatility in the coming weeks if the government gets back up and running and economic data starts to be released. Thursday's decline comes as traders' attention turns to the December Federal Reserve meeting and traders are cutting bets on a central bank rate cut. Collins said she favors keeping rates stable "for a while" to balance inflation and employment risks. Mr. Bostic also said inflation remained a clearer risk to the US economy. Karl Schamotta, chief market strategist at Corpay, said: "With the end of the US government shutdown and the continued hawkish repricing expected by the Federal Reserve, markets are struggling to gain momentum this morning."
