The Department of Justice has announced the creation of a new "Fraud Center Strike Team" aimed at combating the surging tide of cryptocurrency investment fraud perpetrated by transnational criminal organizations operating in the South East Asia region, according to US media reports. The department said in a statement on Wednesday that the inter-agency task force aims to investigate, disrupt and prosecute the most heinous fraud schemes, which are estimated to defraud Americans of nearly $10 billion annually. Criminal networks are running the schemes in camps in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, where fraudulent revenues can account for nearly half of local GDP in some areas. Victims in the US are often tricked into transferring funds to fake cryptocurrency websites and apps hosted by US companies, but the money is then laundered abroad.
