Australian police: Criminals are abusing national cybercrime platform to steal crypto wallet funds

The Australian Federal Police has warned that fraudsters are using Australia's national cybercrime reporting system, ReportCyber, to submit false reports using stolen personal information, and then impersonating Australian Federal Police officers to call victims and steal their digital assets. The scam is highly deceptive, and criminals will verify the information in a reasonable way and act quickly to create a sense of urgency. They illegally obtain information such as email addresses and phone numbers, and use the system's rules that allow third parties to report on their behalf to gain trust. Some victims received a "police" call, were told that they were involved in a cryptocurrency data breach, and received a seemingly official reference number. After seeing a report matching the fraudster's submission, they were almost fooled. Subsequently, a second caller impersonated the platform and used the same number to induce the transfer. Fortunately, the victim noticed and hung up the phone in time. The police said that in similar cases, fraudsters often forge numbers, reminding the public to be vigilant, pay attention to identifying scams, and protect their property. (Decrypt)
