"Fed mouthpiece" Nick Timiraos said divisions within the Federal Reserve were casting a shadow over the path to a rate cut. There was little precedent for such a level of disagreement during the nearly eight-year tenure of Federal Reserve Chairperson Jerome Powell. Officials were divided over which posed a greater threat, persistent inflation or a sluggish labor market, and while investors thought the chances of a rate cut at the Fed's next meeting were still high, the split complicated what had seemed like a viable plan.
