Trump says he is close to reaching a trade deal with India

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the US was close to a deal with India aimed at expanding economic and security ties between the two countries, boosting US energy exports and boosting investment in key US industries. "We're getting a fair deal, a completely fair trade deal," Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "We're getting a deal with India, which is very different from what's been done in the past." Mr. Trump reiterated his optimism that a deal was close, saying: "We're very close to a deal." Mr. Trump also said India had imposed steep tariffs because of its purchases of Russian oil, which India was stopping.
