Peter Cardillo at Spartan Capital Securities said gold futures rose on expectations that the end of the US government shutdown would allow for a return to normal release of government data. This could make it possible for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates further in December. "Once the government reopens, previously unreleased macro data streams will likely indicate that inflation remains stubborn and labour market conditions are weaker than the ADP report suggests," he added. "These two factors could prompt the Fed to cut rates in December, despite repeated cautious rhetoric."
