The Hong Kong government plans to issue another digital green bond denominated in US dollars, Hong Kong dollars, euros and yuan, priced as soon as today. This will be the third time the Hong Kong government has issued digital bonds since 2023, and the previous two times have reached a combined size of 6.80 billion Hong Kong dollars.
S & P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings have respectively awarded Hong Kong the ratings of "AA +" and "AA-" digital bonds in each currency to be issued, which are consistent with their ratings for Hong Kong's long-term foreign currency and local currency issuers.
According to reports, digital bonds can be issued through distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms or on public blockchains such as Ethereum, which may offer greater flexibility. Digital bonds may not only have shorter settlement times and lower fees than traditional bonds, but also enable faster scalability by leveraging the growing appeal of blockchain-based securities.
