Russian entrepreneur Roman Novak and his wife Anna were kidnapped and killed in the United Arab Emirates. Roman Novak had defrauded investors of millions of dollars through various cryptocurrency projects. In 2020, Roman Novak was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud. Roman Novak then moved to Dubai to create cryptocurrency app Fintopio and allegedly raised hundreds of millions of dollars from new investors. In early October, Roman Novak and his wife traveled to a seemingly promising investor conference near Hatta, near the UAE-Oman border. However, they switched vehicles and have not been heard from since.
After several days of silence, Roman Novak's relatives called the police. Russian and Emirati authorities launched an investigation, suspecting that the couple had been lured to a rented villa under false pretenses, and what had been a business meeting suddenly turned into a kidnapping for ransom. The kidnappers tried to coerce Roman Novak into handing over a large amount of cryptocurrency, which was reportedly stored in his wallet and accounts linked to apps and past scams. The kidnappers failed, and tragedy ensued: Roman Novak and his wife were both killed.
