According to Decrypt, South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Ji-na said that South Korea may adjust its sanctions framework against North Korea in response to its threat of cryptocurrency theft.
Previously, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on eight North Korean bankers and two entities, accusing them of supporting nuclear weapons development through cryptocurrency money laundering.
North Korea has reportedly stolen about $2.84 billion in cryptocurrency since January 2024, with some of the money flowing into its nuclear weapons program. Kim Ji-na stressed that it is crucial for South Korea and the United States to coordinate responses to North Korea's digital threats, and South Korea has in the past imposed sanctions on North Korea alone based on U.S. actions.
