Google is unveiling its most powerful chip to date with the intention of winning business from AI companies by offering custom silicon chips. The seventh-generation tensor processing unit (TPU), called "Ironwood", will be available to the public market in the coming weeks, the company said on Thursday, after the chip was first released for testing and deployment in April this year. The self-developed chip will be used to handle a variety of tasks such as large-scale model training, driving real-time chatbots and AI agents. The TPU has been in development for a decade. Ironwood is more than four times faster than the previous generation, and major customers have already started lining up to use it, Google said. AI startup Anthropic plans to use up to 1 million new TPUs to run its Claude model, Google said.
