Australia sanctions North Korean hacking group for allegedly stealing about 1.80 trillion won cryptocurrency last year

The Australian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the 6th local time that it has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on four institutions and one individual suspected of involvement in cyber crimes such as cryptocurrency theft by the North Korean regime. The sanctions target four institutions including the "Lazarus Group", "Kim Su Gil", "Andariel", "Chosun Expo", and Park Jin Hyok, a hacker affiliated with North Korea's Reconnaissance General Administration.
Among them, Park Jin-hyuk and the Lazarus Group are suspected of participating in ransomware attacks (a type of cyber attack that requires money to recover files by encrypting files on computers and other devices). Kim Su-gil, Andaliel and North Korea Expo are suspected of targeting the international medical system, nuclear power plants, think tanks and other cyber attacks. All of the above-mentioned sanctions targets have previously been sanctioned by South Korean and US authorities.
According to a recent report by the Multinational Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), a group of 11 Western countries including South Korea, the United States and Japan, North Korean cybercriminals, including these groups and individuals, stole at least 1.90 billion Australian won (about 1.80 trillion South Korean won) in cryptocurrency from businesses around the world last year alone, the Australian Foreign Ministry said.
