Google is in preliminary talks with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, to ramp up its investment. The new funding round could value Anthropic at more than $350 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The deal could include a strategic investment in which Google would provide Anthropic with more cloud computing services, convertible bonds or a new pricing round starting early next year. The New York Times reported in March, citing legal filings, that Google had invested more than $3 billion in Anthropic, taking a stake of about 14 per cent. The latest talks come as Anthropic competes with its main rival, OpenAI, in a multitrillion-dollar battle for dominance of generative artificial intelligence models. Meanwhile, the tech giants split: Amazon and Google backed Anthropic, while Microsoft and Nvidia invested billions in OpenAI.
