White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a news conference on Tuesday that the pardon of Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, went through the standard vetting process before being submitted to the desk of US President Donald Trump for final approval. In an interview on CBS News' 60 Minutes on Sunday, Mr. Trump defended his decision to grant Mr. Zhao a pardon, saying he did not know him and calling the indictment "a witch hunt by the Biden administration". On Tuesday, Ms Leavitt clarified that Mr. Trump's comments were intended to show that he did not know Mr. Zhao personally. "What he meant was that he did not know Mr. Zhao, that is, he had no personal relationship with this person," she said. Mr. Leavitt said the pardon process had been handled with "the utmost seriousness" and said Mr. Zhao had been overcharged by a "weaponised Department of Justice", echoing Mr. Trump's criticism of the previous administration's handling of the case.
