Goldman Sachs economist Alec Phillips warned that the U.S. government shutdown could have the biggest economic impact on record, lasting longer than the 35-day shutdown in 2018-19 and affecting more institutions. The six-week shutdown could shave 1.15 percentage points off fourth-quarter growth, which is not expected to rebound until early 2026.
