Iran's cryptocurrency mining industry is facing a widespread crisis of illegal mining, with authorities estimating that more than 95 percent of the country's 427,000 active mining rigs are operating without authorization. Iran has become the world's fourth-largest cryptocurrency mining center thanks to the country's massive electricity subsidies, making it a "haven for illegal miners," Akbar Hassan Beklu, CEO of the Tehran Provincial Electricity Distribution Company, said on Sunday. These unlicensed operations consume more than 1.40 quadrillion watts of electricity 24/7, putting enormous pressure on the national grid and threatening the stability of power supply. Most illegal miners disguise their activities as industrial facilities to obtain cheaper electricity, Beklu noted.
