ECB President Christine Lagarde announced that the Governing Council has decided to move forward with the final phase of preparations for the digital euro, marking a key milestone for the project, according to a video posted on the official account of the European Central Bank in X. She said that the European Council had asked on October 23 to accelerate the process in order to launch the digital euro as soon as possible.
Mr. Lagarde stressed that while paper money would continue to circulate, the ECB wanted to keep cash in "digital euro form", allowing the public to use both paper money and digital cash as a "click-to-use" payment app.
According to the plan:
If approved by the European Parliament in 2026, a digital euro pilot will be launched in 2027.
If the test goes well, it is planned to be officially released across Europe in 2029.
Mr. Lagarde said the digital euro was not just a technical project but "a symbol of trust in Europe's common destiny", symbolising the unity of currency and sovereignty.
