According to CNN, three European and American officials familiar with the situation revealed that the Pentagon has assessed that providing long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine will not reduce the active US military inventory, and then gave the green light to the White House to hand over the final political decision to US President Trump. Trump made it clear at a White House working luncheon with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month that he would not provide the missile, saying that "the stockpile of weapons needed to defend the country cannot be released". The Joint Chiefs of Staff submitted the assessment to the White House earlier this month, as Zelensky continued to lobby for the missile - the Ukrainian side hopes to use its range of about 1,600 kilometers to more effectively target deep energy facilities in Russia. Two European officials said the assessment had cheered European allies, who believe the US now lacks a legitimate reason to withhold the missiles. Notably, Mr. Trump's meeting with Mr. Zelensky came just days after he publicly stated that the US "has a large number of Tomahawk missiles available to Ukraine".
