The European Central Bank said on Thursday that it could launch its digital currency pilot project in 2027 if it can secure approval from lawmakers in time. The ECB believes the project is crucial to the financial autonomy of the euro zone. The ECB is using it as a strategic alternative to U.S.-dominated private means of payment such as credit cards and stablecoins. The ECB said the move is increasingly important in an era of heightened geopolitical friction, as financial autonomy and resilience are seen as key to preserving Europe's economic sovereignty. After four years of research and preparation, the ECB said it is currently considering a pilot, meaning some digital euro transactions could take place as early as mid-2027, with full launch two years later.
