OpenAI CEO: Target to have automated AI research interns by 2026 and automated AI researchers by 2028

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said: "We have set an internal goal of having an automated AI research intern running on hundreds of thousands of GPUs by September 2026 and a true automated AI researcher by March 2028. We may not be able to fully achieve this goal, but given the huge impact it could have, we believe it is in the public interest to be open and transparent."
