NVIDIA (NVDA. O) has not developed a quantum computer in-house, but chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang is betting that the company will play a key role in the future development of the technology, according to the Wall Street Journal. In a keynote speech at the GTC conference in Washington, he officially unveiled the NVQLink interconnect system - a technology that connects quantum processors to the AI supercomputers they need to operate efficiently. "NVQLink is the'Rosetta Stone 'that connects quantum and classical supercomputers," Huang said. Quantum processors represent a new computing paradigm that uses the principles of quantum physics to solve difficult problems that traditional computers cannot crack, showing great potential in fields ranging from scientific exploration to financial modelling. To be commercially viable, however, quantum processors must be integrated with high-performance classical computers that perform calculations that quantum devices cannot and correct their inherent errors - the "error correction" process. Tim Costa, general manager of industrial engineering and quantum at Nvidia, which claims its new interconnect technology is the first solution to deliver on the promise of large-scale quantum computing, admits that none of its existing connectivity solutions can meet the speed and scale required for rapid and large-scale error correction.
