Financial transactions between South Korea's top five virtual currency exchanges and Cambodia's Post-Easy Won Group, which is sanctioned by the United States and the United Kingdom, have surged from 9.22 million won in 2023 to 12.80 billion won in 2024, an increase of nearly 1,400 times, a parliamentary investigation found. Transactions are mainly conducted through the US dollar stablecoin Tether (USDT), of which the Bithumb exchange accounts for the largest proportion. The South Korean government is considering imposing financial sanctions on Cambodian criminal organizations to curb possible money laundering activities. Some exchanges have cut ties with the group in March-May this year.
